The Titanic Brewery Shanty Crew

Nine Tenths Below

Nine Tenths Below got together in the latter part of 2010. They specialise in ‘Songs of Ale and Sail’, all of them chorus songs, some accompanied on guitar and/or concertina and many unaccompanied.

The group looks to perform at weekend events, be they Maritime Festivals, Folk Festivals or Beer Festivals! Mid-week bookings in NW England are also considered.

The Titanic Brewery in Stoke, recognising the group’s repertoire of songs as being eminently suited to promoting a brewery with strong maritime connections, adopted the group and became one the the first breweries in Britain to have its own ‘official’ Shanty Crew! They have subsequently named a championship winning beer after them!

Nine Tenths Below took part in two Titanic centenary events in Stoke (the birthplace of Captain Smith) and sang a new song, The Californian, which had been specially written for them by Ron Baxter. The Californian was subjected to a great deal of vilification at the time of the tragedy. This song tries to set the record straight.

The group’s first CD ‘Songs of Ale and Sail’ was launched in March at the White Star in Stoke. It can be bought on-line or by post by clicking here. Or listen first to samples.
